Recently, Fitness Marketing Agency hosted the Gym Owner Business Summit at the London Gatwick Hilton Hotel, bringing together more than 200 gym owners, entrepreneurs, and fitness business founders. The event was designed for business owners who are committed to growing their brands, increasing their impact, and building more profitable businesses. One of the standout sessions came from keynote speaker Jake Humphrey, who shared powerful insights on mindset, responsibility, and high performance.

The Challenge

While many gym owners focus on marketing, sales, operations and finance, one of the biggest barriers to growth often comes from within. Business owners can unknowingly place limits on what they believe is possible for themselves and their businesses.

Running a gym is demanding. Every day brings new challenges, difficult decisions and unexpected obstacles. It is easy to become consumed by problems, setbacks and negative experiences, even when progress is being made.

As Jake explained during his keynote, many business owners naturally focus on what has gone wrong rather than what is going right. This can create a mindset that limits confidence, decision-making, and long-term growth.

“You need reminding of all the great things that you’ve done, all the great things that you continue to do, the success that’s ahead of you.”

The Strategy

Jake’s keynote focused on three key principles that gym owners can apply to both business and life.

The first was the importance of recognising progress. He shared a simple exercise inspired by a guest from The High Performance Podcast. The idea is to create a note on your phone titled “Great things keep happening to me” and add one positive thing to it every day. Whether it is a new client, a productive conversation, quality time with family, or simply feeling good after a workout, the habit encourages people to focus on positive progress rather than dwelling on setbacks.

“Great things keep on happening to me because there is a natural negativity bias of the human mind.”

The second principle is centred on understanding the difference between fault and responsibility. Jake explained that many of the challenges people face are not their fault. Economic conditions, difficult circumstances, and unexpected events are often beyond our control. However, business owners are still responsible for how they respond to those challenges.

“There are loads of things in the lives of all of you in this room that are not your fault… but the brutal reality is that all of those things are your responsibility.”

This mindset encourages business owners to focus on solutions rather than excuses. Whether facing issues with lead generation, rising costs, or operational challenges, growth comes from taking responsibility and finding a way forward.

The third lesson focused on the power of microhabits. While ambitious goals are important, Jake stressed that success is built through consistent daily actions rather than wishful thinking. Large ambitions, whether financial or personal, are achieved through the habits people repeat every day.

“You don’t control your dreams, but you do control your habits, and your habits will determine whether your dreams come true or not.”

By consistently improving personal habits and business behaviours, gym owners can create the foundation for sustainable long-term growth.

The Results

Jake’s keynote delivered a powerful reminder that business growth is not solely determined by strategy, marketing, or systems. The way business owners think, respond to challenges, and approach their daily habits plays a significant role in the results they achieve.

Attendees left with practical strategies they could immediately apply to improve their mindset, build resilience, and create momentum within their businesses. The session reinforced the importance of focusing on what can be controlled, celebrating progress, and committing to the habits that drive success over time.

“You don’t control your dreams, but you do control your habits, and your habits will determine whether your dreams come true or not.”
