Nick Denby, founder of Sleven Fitness, has spent years building a successful independent gym while developing initiatives that support gym owners and coaches across the fitness industry. Alongside growing his own business, he has become a leading voice advocating for fairer conditions for independent gyms, highlighting the financial pressures that limit growth and investment. His work demonstrates how business leadership can extend beyond one facility to create opportunities for an entire industry.
The Challenge
Like many independent gym owners, Nick has experienced increasing financial pressure from rising operating costs. During the podcast, he explains that although his gym continues to deliver high-quality coaching and member experiences, significant increases in business rates and other operating expenses have made reinvesting in the business increasingly difficult.
Nick explains that the gym’s business rates rose dramatically following changes to government relief and property revaluations. As he puts it, “Our business rates in that one year went from £16,000 a year all the way up to £43,000.”
These rising costs have affected not only his own business but many independent gyms across the country. Through conversations with gym owners, Nick has seen similar increases becoming commonplace, making it harder for facilities to invest in staff, equipment, member experiences and future growth.
He believes the current system limits independent gyms before they have the opportunity to expand.
“We’re not asking to pay no tax. We’re just asking for a system that supports growth.”
The Strategy
Rather than simply accepting these challenges, Nick has focused on creating solutions both within his own business and across the wider fitness industry.
One of his major initiatives is Fair Rates for Fitness, a campaign encouraging gym owners to share data on rising business rates while engaging with Members of Parliament to advocate for reforms. Nick has also developed a detailed policy document outlining proposals centred on business rates, VAT and employment support for independent gyms.
Alongside his advocacy work, Nick continues to invest in professional development through Coaches Ed. The programme standardises coaching education and mentorship, helping gyms develop higher coaching standards and clearer career pathways for fitness professionals.
He has also expanded Gym Sync, a nationwide competition platform designed to help gyms run engaging member events without the complexity of organising them from scratch. The system provides gyms with ready-made competition formats, marketing materials and operational support while allowing gym owners to generate additional revenue and strengthen member retention.
Throughout the discussion, Nick consistently returns to one core belief: healthier gyms create healthier communities.
“If gyms get more of that money during growth phases, we could hire more staff, pay coaches better, help coaches build stable lives with mortgages, families and holidays.”
The Results
Nick’s work now extends well beyond the walls of Sleven Fitness.
His Fair Rates for Fitness campaign has gathered business rate data from dozens of gyms to support discussions with government representatives and strengthen the case for industry reform.
Gym Sync has grown into a national competition platform running multiple events each year, with participating gyms using the system to improve member engagement while generating additional income from events.
Coaches Ed has helped gyms improve coaching systems, mentorship and staff development, providing structured education designed to raise professional standards throughout the industry.
Nick has also secured partnerships with globally recognised brands including Nike and Optimum Nutrition, helping participating gyms deliver enhanced competition experiences through Gym Sync.
Reflecting on the wider impact, Nick says:
“I want to see a boom in the industry. We want to see more gyms coming in, more people with more ideas, better standards.”
Words from Nick
Throughout the interview, Nick repeatedly emphasises that his motivation goes beyond financial performance. His goal is to create sustainable careers for coaches while helping independent gyms thrive.
“I want to help people build careers out of this industry.”
He also believes gyms play an important role in society that extends beyond fitness.
“We’re on the frontline of preventative health.”
