When Nick left a successful career in finance, he was looking for more than a new job. He wanted to build a business that gave him purpose while creating a lasting impact on people’s lives. After taking over a struggling CrossFit gym in London with his business partner, Tim, they transformed it into what is now a thriving fitness community with a premium coaching experience, a diverse range of services, and a business designed for long-term growth. Throughout the journey, they have continually evolved their systems, team, and facilities to create a gym that prioritises both member experience and sustainable business success.
The Challenge
When Nick and Tim took over the gym, they inherited a business that required significant change. Rebranding the business was only the beginning. They needed to improve operations, refresh the facilities, build a team, and create a business capable of supporting rising operating costs while delivering a premium experience for members.
During the early years, both founders worked long hours coaching classes while managing every aspect of the business behind the scenes. Nick explained that they were “working very much in the business,” often spending between twelve and sixteen hours each day building the company.
As the business grew, another challenge became clear. Remaining solely as coaches would limit the gym’s future.
“If you’d stayed as a coach… we’d probably be in the same arch.”
Nick recognised that building a scalable business required stepping away from day-to-day coaching, developing systems, and empowering other people to take ownership of key roles.
The Strategy
Rather than relying on themselves to run every part of the business, Nick and Tim focused on creating systems that could be handed over to a growing team. Every role, from coaching and programming to sales, marketing and operations, was documented and refined so others could continue improving the business.
The gym expanded into a much larger facility, allowing the team to introduce multiple training offerings that catered to different audiences while maintaining a premium coaching standard. Members could choose from hybrid training, CrossFit, Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics, conditioning sessions, and open gym access, each with clearly defined coaching standards and member expectations.
Community became another defining feature of the business. Coaches actively introduced members to one another, paired training partners, remembered personal details, and encouraged relationships that extended beyond workouts.
Nick explained that these small details helped create accountability and belonging, making the gym far more than a place to exercise.
The team also invested heavily in their sales process. Every enquiry received a fast personal response, every trial member was guided through a structured onboarding experience, and coaches worked together to learn about each individual before they became a member. This collaborative approach helped create a personalised experience from the very first visit.
Alongside memberships, the business diversified its revenue through events, community competitions, partnerships and venue hire, creating additional income streams while strengthening member engagement.
The Results
The business has grown from a single small training space into a five-thousand-square-foot facility supported by a growing team of full-time and part-time staff. What began as two founders doing everything themselves has become a structured business where leadership, coaching, sales, marketing, and operations are shared across specialist roles.
Today, the gym serves around two hundred and sixty members while offering multiple premium training experiences designed to meet different fitness goals. The business has also developed successful additional revenue streams through events, partnerships and facility hire, reducing reliance on memberships alone.
Even in an increasingly competitive London fitness market, Nick has continued refining the member journey, investing in personalised sales systems, improving retention, and empowering staff with greater responsibility and business transparency.
Words from Nick
“Whenever you’re a business owner, you need to learn and do every bit of your business and then hand that off. If you can take each role, figure it out, learn how to do it, and then hand it off to somebody who can do it better, then that’s when you’re going to start to see your business grow.”
“We’re selling belongings.”
“Most gyms don’t do it, so it just helps you stand out. I’ve had members say, ‘You’re the only gym that got back to me within ten minutes. You’re the first one that showed that you cared.”
