Former Wales rugby captain and British & Irish Lions captain Sam Warburton has successfully transitioned from elite sport into the online fitness industry with the launch of SW7 Academy. After retiring from professional rugby, Sam set out to help people improve their health and fitness through practical, evidence-based coaching. As the business evolved, so did the opportunity to reach a wider audience while remaining true to the values that had built its reputation.

The Challenge

SW7 Academy was founded in 2019 with the aim of giving aspiring rugby players access to professional-level strength and conditioning coaching. However, it quickly became clear that the principles behind the programme could benefit far more than just athletes.

Reflecting on that shift, Sam said:

“We quickly realised we can help a lot more people than just aspiring rugby players.”

The business naturally expanded to support busy professionals, parents, and anyone looking to build strength, improve their fitness and enjoy a healthier lifestyle. While demand continued to grow, Sam understood that building a successful online coaching business required much more than excellent programming.

As he explained:

“People think they can become an online coach, put a link on their story, and off they fly. It doesn’t work.”

For Sam, attracting new members was only part of the equation. Delivering an outstanding coaching experience that encouraged members to stay was equally important.

“You have to work hard to get clients. And once you’ve got them, you need to make sure that you deliver a really good service so you keep them.”

The Strategy

From the beginning, SW7 Academy has been built around honesty, education and long-term results rather than short-lived trends or sensational claims. Sam has always believed that sustainable progress comes from following proven training principles and providing advice that people can trust.

“Let’s just preach the truth because that will always come through in the end.”

As the business entered its next phase of growth, Fitness Marketing Agency helped strengthen the systems behind the brand, enabling SW7 Academy to attract more qualified leads while maintaining the high standard of service that members had come to expect.

The marketing strategy focused on reinforcing the Academy’s authentic voice, increasing visibility, generating consistent enquiries, and creating scalable systems that supported continued business growth. Throughout the process, the emphasis remained firmly on delivering genuine value rather than pursuing growth at the expense of the customer experience.

The Results

The impact of these improvements was reflected in both membership growth and business operations. SW7 Academy increased its membership from approximately 1,100 members to around 1,600, while its premium Signature coaching programme also experienced significant growth, increasing from around 100 members to between 120 and 130.

Discussing the results, Sam said:

“Since we’ve jumped in with you guys, we’re now on 1,600.”

The increase in demand also transformed the internal structure of the business. With a steady flow of enquiries coming through, Sam’s co-founder was able to dedicate his role entirely to sales.

“Josh’s role since we’ve gone with you guys has turned into full-time sales because the amount of leads coming in has just been phenomenal.”

As the business continued to expand, SW7 Academy grew into a team of nine, allowing each member of staff to focus on delivering an exceptional client experience while supporting the company’s long-term vision.

Words From Sam

Throughout the conversation, one message remained consistent. For Sam, success is measured not only by business growth but by the positive impact the Academy has on people’s lives.

“I want to help people. I want people to be able to live the highest quality of life that they can.”

He also highlighted the importance of patience and consistency when building an online coaching business.

“Stick with it, stay in there, and you will build traction if you’re delivering a good service.”

These principles continue to shape every aspect of SW7 Academy, from its coaching philosophy to the way it supports its growing community of members.

What’s Next?

SW7 Academy continues to evolve by expanding its coaching programmes and introducing new ways to support members at every stage of their fitness journey. Alongside its established online coaching services, the business has launched a youth development programme designed to help young athletes master the fundamentals before progressing to more advanced training.

At the same time, Sam is preparing to open physical gym facilities, extending the Academy’s reach while remaining committed to the same philosophy that has guided the business since its launch.

“Let’s just preach the truth because that will always come through in the end.”
